How consultants set their rates...

As a consultant, how do we set our rates?

This is a common question and one that so many struggles with.

No one wants to charge too much, and we don't want to charge too little.

Michale Zipursky from Consulting Success puts out a great study on consulting fees and has surveyed over 30K consultants.

Here are a few interesting stats:

  • The majority of consultants (31.37%) use a project-based rate to price their projects.
  • Thats great but 23.38% of consultants bill by the hour!πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ
  • 17.30% of consultants use value-based fees to price their projects.
  • 15.40% use monthly retainers β€” and 12.55% of consultants use a daily rate.

The average consulting engagement value:

  • 22.24% – $500-$2000 USD
  • 18.25% – $2001-$5000 USD
  • 16.54% – $5001-$10,000 USD
  • 14.83% – $20,001-$50,000 USD
  • 12.74% – $10,001-$20,000 USD
  • 7.79% – $100,000+ USD
  • 7.60% – $50,001-$100,000 USD

Most consultants earn five or six figures β€” or even more β€” per month!

  • 29.90% of consultants earn $10K-$45K per month.
  • 23.57% earn $5000-$10K per month.
  • 21.86% earn $2000-$5000 per month.
  • 20.72% of consultants earn less than $2000 per month.
  • 2.47% earn $45K-$100K per month β€” and 1.52% are earning $100K-$250K per month.
  • 0.76% of consultants are earning a whopping $250K+ per month.

There is so much more we can learn from this study, and some of these stats can help us see where we are in our business compared to others.

How Does $18,952 In Monthly Revenue Sound?πŸ’°

BizableTV guest and one of my favorite people, Dan Miller, has built a thriving and profitable membership community called the 48 Days Eagles.

Dan said that in January of 2017 and had 378 people quickly enrolled at his launch special of $24 a month, generating $9072.00 the first month. In the second month, his revenue jumped to $18,952!

Consider starting a membership community if:

  • You have a unique message
  • You are an expert in an area that interests other people
  • People are asking you for your advice on a particular topic
  • You have been stuck in starting over every month with your income
  • You enjoy a continuous monthly flow of recurring revenue

Are You Stuck Playing Small?

I recently attended Mike Kim's You Are The Brand Live in Denver, and he did not disappoint! It was a great two days with extraordinary speakers.

Mike recently shared his thoughts on why we may be playing small and the four types of business owners he has come across.

These include:

  1. Gunslingers are great at sales, but tend to be impulsive and make decisions by the seat of their pants.

  2. Mechanics are great at business operations, but they tend to think β€œword of mouth” advertising is all they need which rarely generates enough sales.

  3. Goalies have their systems down and are very efficient, but need absolute certainty before making decisions. They often miss massive opportunities that are impossible to measure.

  4. Unicorns are the total package. Their teams have all six areas of mastery covered, but they don’t start off that way.

I've Built Apps, You Can TooπŸ‘

Ever thought....wow, that would be a great App! We launched our first commercial App in 2016, and it's still going strong today, generating about $7-figures a year in revenue.

More recently, you may have heard of BizableTV, another series of Apps that we launched in January 2022......and you want to know the truth?

I don't know a lick of code! But I have never let this stop me, and you shouldn't either.

In 2021 alone, consumers spent an astounding $170 billion on apps -- up 19 percent from 2020.

I used no-code apps to develop an MVP (Minimum Viable Product) and recently ran across this article with three tips for getting started with no-code apps that may be helpful to you.

  • Get clear on which features you need for your App
  • Choose the right no-code app builder
  • Create your fusion team
